How Are EV Battery Manufacturer Codes Assigned Under BPAN?

Under the MoRTH BPAN specification, every EV battery pack incorporates a 3-character manufacturer identifier at positions 3–5, immediately preceded by the 2-character country code (positions 1–2). These alphanumeric codes are uniquely allocated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to authorized battery pack fabricators and vehicle OEMs across India, China, South Korea, Japan, and the USA to ensure 100% supply chain traceability and recall compliance.

Where This Data Originates

All 3-character manufacturer codes (positions 3 to 5 of the BPAN) and 2-character country prefix standards (positions 1 and 2) are derived from Annexure I Table 17 of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Draft Guidelines on Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN) published in September 2025. Because the central government registry is in the pilot phase, specific legal corporate entities are mapped to their geographic manufacturing clusters until final gazetted notification.

What to Do If Your Manufacturer Code Is Not Found

If your 3-character manufacturer code returns no match:

Check Visual Confusion: Re-examine the label for character confusion: numeral 0 vs letter O, numeral 1 vs letter I, or numeral 5 vs letter S.
Pre-Standardization Pack: If your electric vehicle was manufactured prior to late 2025, the serial code follows the internal OEM legacy format rather than the 21-digit MoRTH draft BPAN specification.
