Every character in the BPAN carries specific information about the battery.

8 | 0001India's EV market grew by over 45% in FY2024. With millions of battery packs entering the market — manufactured in China, Korea, India, and elsewhere — the government needed a traceability system. The BPAN draft guidelines were released in September 2025 to solve three specific problems:
As of February 2026, the BPAN regulation is in draft stage. MoRTH has not yet issued a formal notification mandating BPAN labelling. However, major manufacturers are expected to begin voluntary compliance ahead of formal notification. Once notified, all new battery packs sold in India will require a BPAN label.
