Scroll any Indian EV group on Reddit or Team-BHP and the same confession keeps appearing. An owner charged his NMC powered car to 100 percent every single night for two years, then watched the service team pull up BMS logs after a warranty claim. The battery had aged far faster than the brochure promised, and the logs told the whole story.
Your battery does not usually die in one dramatic moment. It loses life in small, avoidable doses, one bad habit at a time. The frustrating part is that almost every owner makes the same handful of mistakes, and almost none of them are mentioned in the showroom. Each one is silent, each one is logged by the battery management system, and each one is completely preventable.
Here are the seven charging mistakes that quietly kill EV batteries in India, what each one actually does inside the cells, and the simple fix for every one of them.
1. Charging an NMC battery to 100 percent every night
Most Indian EVs use NMC chemistry, and NMC cells age fastest when they sit at high voltage. An r/CarsIndia thread on battery degradation put it the way battery researchers keep repeating: charging an NMC pack to 100 percent every day clearly accelerates degradation, and most EVs already lose 5 to 8 percent of capacity in their first few years without any help. Owners who add a nightly full charge on top of that push the curve far faster.
The fix is simple. Set your daily charge limit to 80 percent if your car allows it, and save 100 percent for long trips. LFP packs, like the one in the Tata Nexon EV, are the exception. Their flat voltage curve needs a periodic full charge so the battery management system can balance the cells.
Not sure which chemistry your car carries? Our NMC vs LFP battery safety guide explains how to tell them apart and why the difference matters so much in Indian conditions.
2. Leaving the car parked at 100 percent in the sun
High state of charge plus high temperature is the most damaging combination a lithium ion cell can experience. Studies on NMC cells parked at full charge in Indian summer heat have measured parasitic SEI layer growth up to 1.8 times faster than a pack resting at a moderate charge level. The cell literally builds a resistive film inside itself while it sits there doing nothing.
If you charge overnight and then leave the car in open parking through a 44 degree afternoon, you are cooking the pack at its most vulnerable moment. Either cap the charge at 80 percent for daily use, or time the charge so it finishes just before you leave. The pack spends very little of its life at high voltage, and that is exactly how it should be.
3. Making DC fast charging your default
DC fast charging is a brilliant tool for highway trips and a terrible daily habit. A public 50 to 240 kW charger pushes current far harder than a 7.4 kW home wallbox, and all that extra heat lands in the cells. Heat is the master accelerator of every degradation mechanism a battery has.
The habit burns money too. Pulse Energy’s 2026 India charging rate survey found public DC fast charging clustered at 18 to 25 rupees per unit, while home charging sits at 6 to 10 rupees. Daily fast charging can cost three times more per kilometre and shave years off the pack at the same time. Use DC chargers for what they were designed for: long journeys and genuine emergencies.
4. Repeatedly draining the pack below 10 percent
Deep discharge stresses cells in a different way, pulling voltage down to levels where the anode structure weakens. This is not a hidden rule either. Warranty teams openly use it. A claim analysis published by EVxpertz notes that Indian service teams can deny a battery warranty claim when BMS logs show pack temperatures above 55 degrees Celsius or repeated deep discharge below 10 percent.
Treat 20 percent as your practical floor. Below that you gain almost nothing in daily life, and you hand the service department a documented reason to question your next claim.
5. Using cheap third party chargers
India’s electric scooter fire crisis of 2022 forced the government to enforce AIS-156 Phase 2, the safety standard that governs battery construction, charger behaviour and thermal propagation. A non certified charger bypasses exactly the interlocks that standard mandates: correct voltage cut off, temperature sensing and proper communication with the BMS.
Fire investigators repeatedly point to incompatible or poor quality chargers as a common trigger in two wheeler fires. If your original charger is lost or damaged, buy the OEM unit or a certified replacement with the exact rating. Our EV battery fire safety guide lists the warning signs every owner should know by heart.
6. Plugging in while the pack is still hot
You have just finished a fast highway run in summer and the pack is warm. Plugging straight into a fast charger stacks charging heat on top of driving heat. The BMS protects the cells by slowing the charge, which is why the same 50 kW charger sometimes crawls in the afternoon and flies at night.
Give the pack 20 to 30 minutes of rest before a fast charge in hot weather, or simply charge in the evening after the ambient temperature drops. Overnight AC charging after a hot day is the gentlest option your battery will ever get.
7. Skipping software updates and BMS balancing
Manufacturers quietly ship battery management improvements through over the air updates: smarter charge curves, better thermal logic and more accurate state of health estimation. Owners who skip updates keep older, harsher charge behaviour running for years without knowing it. A periodic full charge followed by a few hours of rest also lets the BMS balance the cell groups, which keeps the capacity estimate honest and the pack even.
What your BMS log says about you
Every habit above lands in the BMS log, and the BMS log is the first thing a service team opens when you file a battery warranty claim. Every major Indian brand, from Tata to MG to Ola, applies a 70 percent State of Health floor within the warranty period. Slow, natural degradation below that line is covered. Damage patterns caused by the seven mistakes above are not.

A simple nightly routine that fixes everything
Set the charge limit to 80 percent if your pack is NMC. Charge overnight on AC after the temperature drops. Keep the car out of direct sun where possible, keep the gauge above 20 percent, and give the pack a full charge only when the BMS asks for balancing or a trip demands it. That is the entire routine, and it costs nothing.
